Puglia IGP

Puglia IGP Wines: freedom of expression, rooted in quality

The Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) offers producers greater flexibility in grape varieties and winemaking techniques, while ensuring the origin of the wine from the broader region of Puglia. This designation allows for innovation and the cultivation of both renowned native grapes (such as Nero di Troia, Primitivo, Verdeca, Bombino Nero) and popular international varieties (such as Chardonnay and Sangiovese), enabling the creation of a wide range of wine styles.
The vast canvas of Puglia IGP Wines
The production area of Puglia IGP is extensive, encompassing the entire administrative territory of the provinces of Bari, BAT (Barletta-Andria-Trani), Brindisi, Foggia, Lecce, and Taranto. Ruvo di Puglia, home to Crifo, is part of this broader area. Puglia is characterized by diverse climate and soil conditions: long sunny summers balanced by constant coastal winds that keep the vineyards healthy, and varied soils including limestone and clay inland, sandy and marine soils near the coast, and iron-rich red earth. This rich diversity allows for a wide spectrum of varietal expressions and wine styles.

Innovations of Crifo’s IGP wines: from fresh whites to bold reds

  • Fuorilemura Chardonnay Puglia IGP: This elegant white wine is made from pure Chardonnay grapes, grown on the first hillside slopes of the Murgia northeast of Ruvo di Puglia. The winemaking process is unique: the grapes, rigorously hand-picked and selected, are destemmed and protected from oxygen contact by adding CO2. Two hours of cold maceration at about 15°C follow to extract aromatic precursors from the skins, a gentle pressing, decantation in steel, and two fermentation phases (one in steel, one subsequent in barrels). The wine then ages on fine lees with bâtonnage, enhancing its complexity and stability. Its organoleptic notes are captivating: a bright straw yellow with an intense golden shimmer, immediate aromas of exotic fruit (pineapple, yellow peach), white fruit, apple, jasmine, and delicate vanilla notes. The taste is balanced, fresh, and elegant. Suggestions for refined pairings include linguine with asparagus cream and red tuna tartare, swordfish carpaccio with caper sauce, or aged Castel del Monte pecorino.
  • Grifone Sangiovese Puglia IGP: This expressive red is made from pure Sangiovese grapes, grown on the Murgia hills. After manual harvest, the grapes are destemmed, crushed, and subjected to an 8-day maceration at 25°C. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations occur in steel, followed by aging and bottling. The wine has an intense ruby red color and a lively bouquet of sour cherry, cherry, and iris, supported by secondary notes of tomato leaf and dried herbs. On the palate, it reveals a vigorous yet silky tannic texture and balanced acidity. It pairs beautifully with platters of cured meats and aged cheeses, pappardelle with horse ragù, or wild boar braised with sun-dried tomatoes.
  • Suavì Sparkling White Wine Puglia IGP: This sparkling white wine, fresh and vibrant, is made from pure Verdeca grapes (also known as Pampanuto in some contexts). Its color is an ethereal straw yellow, with subtle aromas of fresh fruit, green apple, and delicate white flowers. On the palate, it offers a pleasant liveliness and citrusy freshness. It is perfect for appetizers with seafood or light fish dishes, such as grilled fish, croquettes, or potato chips.
  • Suavì Sparkling Rosé Wine Puglia IGP: A delightful sparkling rosé, made exclusively from pure Bombino Nero grapes. Its soft pink color resembles peony. On the nose, it reveals delicate floral scents of hydrangea, while on the palate, fruity notes of pomegranate and wild strawberry are perceived. The bubbles are silky, and the wine stands out for its exuberance and varied bouquet. It is ideal for appetizers, light dishes, or raw fish, such as fried paranza, octopus and potato salad, or burrata.
  • CRYFUS Moscato Puglia IGP Sweet Sparkling Wine: This aromatic and sweet sparkling wine is made 100% from Moscato Bianco using the Charmat method. It presents a straw yellow color with golden reflections, fine and persistent bubbles, and an intense aromatic profile dominated by muscat notes. It is the perfect pairing for almond paste pastries, fruit tarts, or other desserts.
  • Cryfus Easy Extra Dry White Sparkling Wine (Bombino Bianco) and Extra Dry Rosé (Bombino Nero) Puglia IGP: These sparkling wines, produced using the Charmat method, are made respectively from Bombino Bianco (for the White) and Bombino Nero (for the Rosé). They stand out for their intense fruit aromas (particularly plums and peach for the White, raspberry for the Rosé) and their balanced and harmonious acidity, making them excellent versatile aperitifs or pairings with fish and pasta dishes.

Other relevant Puglia IGP wines: The Crifo IGP portfolio also includes the Crifo Nero di Troia IGP and the Crifo Le Carrare Primitivo Puglia IGP, demonstrating the impressive breadth and diversity of their IGP offering, allowing for full exploration of the potential of Puglian viticulture.
