All Apulian vines authorised by the regulations, used in the production of Crifo wines
Crifo’s Puglian wines certified as Doc, controlled designation of origin, Docg, controlled and guaranteed designation of origin, and Igp, protected geographical indication, are respectively 8, 2, and 13.
Certified wines and authorized grape varieties adhere to a specific “disciplinary” that sets guidelines for production in a defined area, often regional or local, using particular grape varieties in a predefined percentage.
Only by following these rules can a wine have the Doc, Docg, and Igp mention on its label. Generally, they are referred to as Dop wines, protected designation of origin, or Igt, typical geographical indication, for export.
Among the authorized Puglian grape varieties for producing certified wines, the Cantina of Ruvo di Puglia cultivates several, including five native ones. With these, it produces its Castel del Monte Dop, Castel del Monte Docg, and Puglia Igp labels. The first ones come from authorized grape varieties, cultivated in a vast area around the historic Frederick’s castle.
The production disciplinary of Castel del Monte Doc is characterized by a long list of types, depending on the name given to the authorized grape variety.
Specifically, Crifo signs 8 labels with the Castel del Monte Dop: red, white, and rosé wines.
The grape varieties used for production are
- Nero di Troia and Montepulciano for Grifone Castel del Monte DOP Rosso
