We are Tradition
The column that looks at tradition
“We Are Tradition” is the title of a column launched in the summer of 2023 on Crifo’s social channels with the aim of sharing the history, culture, and traditions of the area that hosts the Ruvo di Puglia Winery.
The first stop on this journey took us inside the Jatta National Museum, where the prestigious archaeological collection that the Jatta family has nurtured over two centuries is preserved, with over two thousand artifacts mainly found in the Ruvo area. Later, during a walk through the city’s beauties, we had the chance to discover curious anecdotes and fascinating stories. Ruvo di Puglia presents itself as a unique territory, a true treasure to explore, where nature, art, and history blend together, creating a happy union of changing cultivated fields, folkloric impressions, and precious testimonies of times gone by.
Ruvo di Puglia, a city of ancient foundation, is part of the Alta Murgia Park area, characterized by an extraordinarily varied and rich territory, shaped by rural life. Equidistant from Canosa and Bari, in Roman times it held the role of statio, being a day’s walk from both cities.
The territory hosts vast expanses of olive groves and vineyards: among the most important native grape varieties stands out the Nero di Troia, of very ancient origin, to which the people of Ruvo have always devoted particular care, so much so that some 19th-century documents already speak of technological advances in cultivation and winemaking. Cultivated from Canosa to Minervino, from Ruvo to Bari, the Nero di Troia gives a distinctive character to various Crifo brand red and rosé wines.
Staying on topic, a fascinating anecdote concerns the socio-economic fabric of the city and tells how the vintages of 1924, 1925, and 1926, a triennium of record wine production, have remained etched in the history of Ruvo di Puglia. The economic results of this period of abundance allowed the landowners of the time to complete their palatial homes with ease, adorning the facades with decorations and commemorative symbols. The majestic palaces, still an integral part of the city’s architecture today, not only house residences but also testimonies of the cellars and oil mills used at the time, symbols of the wine productivity that has permeated Ruvo’s history.
