The Ruvo di Puglia Winery is sponsoring the temporary exhibition “Atlas – The Man Who Held Up the World” set up in the “Grottone” of Palazzo Jatta in Ruvo di Puglia.
The large red-figure crater by the painter of Darius, kept in the deposits of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, was discovered in Ruvo di Puglia in the first half of the 19th century in a semi-chamber tomb. Today it returns to the city where it was found thanks to the temporary exhibition “Atlas – The Man Who Held Up the World,” set up in the “Grottone” of Palazzo Jatta.
The exhibition, available until July 30, 2023, is named after the myth depicted on the crater. The painter of Darius, in fact, tells the story of Atlas, the titan who holds up the celestial vault on his shoulders, meeting Heracles in the garden of the Hesperides and, in an attempt to deceive him, falls victim to the hero’s trick himself.
At the exhibition’s inauguration on May 10, the President of the Ruvo di Puglia Winery, Sebastiano Marinelli, also spoke, emphasizing the importance of considering culture as a value but also as a resource. “Our territory is rich in history, culture, and tradition: every inch of it deserves to be protected and enhanced,” stated the President of the Ruvo winery, which has held the status of Sustainable Winery since 2022.
The exhibition is also connected to the show “The Instant and Eternity. Between Us and the Ancients” curated by Demetrios Athanasoulis, Marialuisa Catoni, Massimo Osanna, and Stéphane Verger and inaugurated at the Baths of Diocletian in Rome on May 4. Among the three hundred ancient and medieval works on display is the Talos Vase, a famous highlight of the Jatta Museum.
