Puglia IGP wines: Crifo’s production

25 October 2020

In addition to the important Dop, Doc, and Docg wines, the production of Igp-labeled wines from the Ruvo di Puglia Winery is extensive and fundamental.

Unlike Doc and Dop, which require all production stages (cultivation, processing, and maturation of the grapes) to be carried out in a specific geographical location, the Igp regulations allow for exceptions. In fact, the guidelines permit one stage (such as bottling, in the case of wines) to be carried out in other parts of Italy.

The Igp Puglia (also see Igt Puglia) is the typical geographical indication “Puglia” reserved for various wines produced from grapes in the production area of Bari and province, BAT (Barletta – Andria – Trani), Brindisi, Foggia, Lecce, and Taranto.

This means that under the Protected Geographical Indication Puglia, there are white wines, including sparkling, spumante, overripe grapes, and passito; reds, including sparkling, overripe grapes, passito, and novello; rosés, including sparkling, spumante, and novello.

The Puglia Igp designation is dedicated to 13 Crifo labels among its various lines: wines produced from native grapes and others.

Here they are listed starting from the native grape varieties for the Ruvo di Puglia Winery:

Nero di Troia: a native black grape variety typical of the area, named for its high polyphenolic content. It has an intensely dark ruby-colored berry. In the last century, it became famous and was even exported in bottles to France. The wine obtained from this grape variety has an intense ruby red color, a finely tannic, austere, spicy taste with aromas of blackberries and licorice that evolve over time into notes of cinchona calisaya.

The Protected Geographical Indication Puglia wines from Nero di Troia Crifo are:

two three-liter Bag in Tube, “black” and “orange” edition, pure IGP

Bombino bianco: a native Puglian grape characterized by low vigor but good productivity. Vinified pure, it produces a straw-yellow wine with a rich and pleasant aroma and a slightly mineral taste, with hints of almonds, anise, and a touch of apricot and tropical fruits.

The Igp Puglia from Bombino Bianco Crifo are:

Moscatello selvatico: another interesting Puglian grape variety in the Ruvo di Puglia area. It has a medium-small, orbicular, tri or pentalobate leaf vine, with a medium-sized conical-cylindrical cluster. The berry is medium-large, with a bright green skin of good consistency. It is a distinctly sweet aromatic grape. The resulting wine is straw-yellow in color, with a fragrant and musky aroma. The taste is fresh, delicate, and typically aromatic.

Igp Puglia from Moscatello Selvatico Crifo:

The other Igp Puglia under the Crifo brand are
